Although Southwest Florida attracts millions of tourists every year there are two islands just off the coastline that garner their fair share of attention and tourists – and for good reason. Those islands are Sanibel & Captiva. In fact, Frommer’s Travel Guide named Sanibel the #1 Top Tourist destination in 2011. According to the Sanibel & Captiva Chamber of Commerce’s website there are plenty of reasons for the adulation. That’s because the islands have 15 miles of unspoiled beaches. 22 miles of bike paths. 50 types of fish. 230 species of birds. 250 types of shells. And 0 stop lights. The Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel is another major attraction. It’s part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. Tourists, as well as full time Southwest Florida residents, treasure the islands of Sanibel & Captiva.
